A surprisingly large number of Small Copper still, which is by far the dominant butterfly, with a few Small White and Meadow Brown. New species added were a Sycamore Moth (Acronicta aceris) caterpillar, Diamond-back Marble (Eudemis profundana) moth, Oak Borer (Agrilus angustulus) beetle and Sallow Gall Midge (Iteomyia capreae) galls on Salix sp. leaf.   […]

Dock Bug on a Silver Birch leaf

Very few butterflies on the wing. A few Gatekeeper and Speckled Wood, a single Large White and some distant unidentified blues. The Common Sycamore Aphid that have been keeping tight formation in aestivation on the underside of sycamore leaves for the past few months have vanished. They will have dispersed and migrated to other sycamore […]

leaf mines of larvae of the Buckthorn Bent-wing moth on a Common Buckthorn leaf

There are two reliable locations for seeing the Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) dragonfly and I was fortunate to see it at both this morning. It is such a strong, fast flyer and rarely seems to settle anywhere that getting photos is extremely difficult. The larvae in the Buckthorn Bent-wing (Bucculatrix frangutella) leaf mines are now leaving […]

Mother of Pearl Moth

Two new insects today, a Mother of Pearl (Patania ruralis) moth and a Silver Birch Aphid (Euceraphis betulae), as well as leaf mines on a birch leaf caused by larvae of the Birch Tortrix (Epinotia immundana) moth and on oak leaves caused by larvae of the Oak Cloud (Acrocercops brongniardella) moth and a Stigmella sp. moth. […]

empty pupal case of a Six-spot Burnet moth

Today I was invited to take part in a search with someone from Butterfly Conservation UK and from the Banstead Commons Conservators, looking for a rare moth species, the Surrey Midget (Phyllonorycter scabiosella). More specifically we were looking for the leaf mines caused by the larva of the moth on the basal leaves of Small […]

Northern Wheatear sitting on a fence post

A migrating Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) spent a good part of the day searching for insects, spiders and worms from its perches on the fenceposts of the new sheep enclosure. I spent quite a while chasing it from post to post before finally getting a decent photo. I found leaf mines of the larva of […]

Fox Moth caterpillar crossing a path on Banstead Downs

New insects added were the caterpillar of the Fox Moth (Macrothylacia rubi) and a female Willow Emerald Damselfly (Chalcolestes viridis). This is my first species of damselfly recorded on the Downs and together with the Southern Hawker dragonfly only the second member of the Odontata. I discovered an Apple Leaf Miner moth (Lyonetia clerkella) leaf […]

Common Froghopper attracting the attention of a spider

New insect today another one of those very confusing ichneumon wasp males that all look very similar. My best guess on this one and it could be the most appropriate name for it in this case is Ichneumon confusor. On the upper surface of an English Oak leaf I came across what I believe to […]

Jersey Tiger Moth on Hemp-agrimony flower

New insects added today were Jersey Tiger (Euplagia quadripunctaria) moth, a possible Common Furrow Bee (Lasioglossum calceatum?) and Parent Bug (Elasmucha grisea). Latest photographs of already recorded species include a Dock Bug (Coreus marginatus) seen for the first time despite its name on Dock, Sun Fly (Helophilus pendulus) hoverfly (a.k.a. ‘The Footballer’), a Common Wasp […]

Dingy Footman moth

Another very overcast morning after a few overnight rain showers, which didn’t stop me adding several new insects to the list for this year. A moth, two flies and two wasps – Dingy Footman (Collita griseola), grass fly (Meromyza sp.), Snail-killing Fly (Trypetoptera punctulata), Yellow-tipped Darwin Wasp (Ichneumon stramentor) and Oriental Chestnut Gall Wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) […]

Wavy-barred Sable moth at rest

Chalkhill Blue is still present in amazingly large numbers. New sightings included Wavy-barred Sable (Pyrausta nigrata), Tortoise Shield Bug (Eurygaster testudinaria) final stage nymph and Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax). On an English Oak (Quercus robur) the galls of the Knopper Gall Wasp (Andricus quercuscalicis) were found, as well as the egg sacs of the Sputnik Spider […]

Roe Deer and fawn on Banstead Downs

What a start to my walk today! Just 3 minutes after setting foot on the Downs I realised that there were a Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) doe and her fawn walking towards me along the path. So I fired off a quick couple of shots and ducked into the trees to my right, trying to […]

Six-spot Burnet moths on Small Scabious flower

As I mentioned on 1st July it is becoming a much more uncommon sight to see a Song Thush, but this morning I had a pair on the path ahead of me near the south-eastern corner. There has been a major eruption of Chalkhill Blue (Lysandra coridon) butterflies. Particularly along the northern edge of the […]

Median Wasp on Hogweed

A scorcher today. It was 29°C already at 11:00. I’d normally be on the Downs then but have been home over an hour already. Saw the first Peacock (Aglais io) butterfly since 28th April and there were three new insects added to my list – Median Wasp (Dolichovespula media), Nettle-tap moth (Anthophila fabriciana) and a tumbling flower […]

Small Emperor Moth caterpillar

Ringlet (Aphantopus hyperantus) and Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) are now the most numerous butterflies. New insects for this year’s Downs list are the flies Common Splay-wing (Phania funesta) and Hornet Mimic Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria), an ichneumon wasp (possibly genus Trychosis, cf. T. legator), a possible Yellow-legged Mining Bee (Andrena flavipes?) and the very photogenic (and […]

Small Copper butterfly on a Smooth Hawk's-beard flower

A few showers of rain yesterday, not that you’d notice. Still Marbled White butterflies everywhere you look and both Small Heath and Ringlet seem to be increasing in numbers. First sighting of the summer this morning of a single Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas). Other insects seen were Common Green Shield Bug (Palomena prasina) 3rd instar nymphs […]

tumbling flower beetle on an Ox-eye Daisy

Among the butterflies today was the first Small Skipper (Thymelicus sylvestris) of the season. New insects added were Brown Oak Tortrix (Archips crataegana) and the first tumbling flower beetle (Variimorda villosa) of the season. On the flower front the first of the Common Ragwort (Jacobaea vulgaris) is close to blooming.     Nature note for the […]

Marbled White butterflies

Very windy again today. Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) still the dominant butterfly, seemingly on every patch of Red Clover (Trifolium pratense). Dark Green Fritillary (Speyeria aglaja) are definitely increasing in numbers. An insect added to the year’s list was Straw Dot (Rivula sericealis) moth. On a Hogweed I came across a Flower Crab Spider (Misumena […]

tiny Artichoke Beetle on a bramble leaf

On a very hot humid day with only a gentle breeze Dark Green Fritillary (Speyeria aglaja) are still present in large numbers along with Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) but today outnumbered by Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) which seems to be reaching peak numbers. Some new additions were Artichoke Beetle (Sphaeroderma testaceum), Silver Y (Autographa gamma) moth and […]
